How To Make A Christmas Tune Like Mariah Carey? With Olivia Melkonian, Hugo Van Del Poel and Lyzza
Description
Olivia Melkonian is a sound artist, DJ and audio producer raised between London, UK and Sharjah, UAE. She has worked in audio for over five years in youth-led radio stations, record labels, events companies and alongside leading UK-based production companies including Listen Entertainment and Audio Always. Olivia recently won a commission for the BBC. Invested in projects of cultural preservation and reflections of uprooted histories, Olivia pieces together collective memory through remnants found in the home. Inspired by generational family traditions of storytelling, she archives dialect, ritual and even the mundane that remain unique to personal and family experiences. Realising the power in recording our existence through sound and analogue visuals, Olivia captures collective memory as a tool of resistance, an act of revolution.
LYZZA - Born-and-raised Brazilian DJ/Producer/Vocalist LYZZA is taking over Amsterdam’s experimental club scene. She’s become a familiar face during radical and underground club nights as a DJ and has been seen doing shows with Mykki Blanco and on line-ups alongside names like Le1f, Princess Nokia and SOPHIE. From clubs in Amsterdam like Paradiso and NYX, LYZZA quickly paved her way to international clubs in Berlin, London, Madrid, Warsaw and Shanghai. With live sets on platforms such as Red Light Radio, The DeadHype and Boiler Room it’s more than obvious LYZZA is a force to be reckoned with Ever since deciding to take making music seriously somewhere in 2016 and teaching herself to use Logic with online tutorials, LYZZA has been building a name for herself on the alternative club scene. On the one hand, this is down to her music. Lyzza’s sound stands apart, erring more towards whole compositions than tracks built specifically for the club. On the other, it’s because of a reputation she’s growing as someone who speaks their mind and is here to change things by showing people that there are ways to do things outside of the status quo if you’re willing to try hard enough - Radar Radio Released in November through LA-Based label SYMBOLS, known for being ran by Burning Man resident Kastle and having released music from artists such as Santa Muerte and WWWINGS; her new and widely acclaimed Powerplay EP is the latest step in a burgeoning career. Prominently with her own vocals and one feature from NUXXE’s Shygirl- It’s an energetic debut full of cracking drums, hardstyle kicks and trance melodies. Her talents recognized by platforms such as Dummy Magazine,Noisey, THUMP and being named ‘One of the Electronic Artists to watch in 2018’ by Radar Radio; we expect to only hear more from LYZZA in the upcoming years.
Hugo van de Poel - Tired of talking to your therapist? Try Hugo van de Poel’s music for a change! His Dutch songs about the heavy side of life inspire many with their upbeat take on depression. But that’s not all: Hugo makes all kinds of music, ranging from ambient / new age to gabber. His body of works is an ode to not fitting in. Next to music, Hugo also is curator of things, focussing on (mental) health and supporting niche communities.
