The Pedro Club was established in 1929 by Baroness Harwood and was revived in the 1960’s with the support of Dame Elizabeth Taylor, who served as a patron up until her death in March 2011. Today the Pedro Club remains as one of the oldest functioning youth clubs within the UK. They have connections with all other youth clubs around the UK with whom they often set sports and mathematics tournaments and meet ups. James Cook a local resident, a former British Super-Middleweight Champion, was alerted to the plight of the Pedro Club and set about organising a rescue programme, he formed a new management committee, and due to their arduous efforts the club reopened in 2003. In June 2007 James Cook was awarded an MBE within the Queen’s Honours List for Services to the Youth Justice in Hackney. Since 2020, the club initiated the Knock Out Knife Crime (KOKC) endeavor which uses boxing to promote positive lifestyle changes leading to brighter futures for youths across the UK-programmes use the sport and science of boxing to empower, inspire, motivate, support, mentor, embolden and elevate the next generation. Pedro Club also has classrooms in its basement for mathematics training and music lessons.
