Asmaa Jamaa

Asmaa Jama is a Danish-born Somali poet, visual artist, and filmmaker. Inspired by Agha Shahid Ali and Warsan Shire, Asmaa uses their artistry to speak intimately and honestly about their identity as a Somali, and their experiences of being a third-culture kid in the UK. Their work has been published in both print and online, in publications including Popshot Magazine, 404 Ink, and Paper Swans’ Young Poets’ Anthology. In 2018 they were commended by the Young Poets Network for their poem Bi-när. As a visual artist, they have been featured online by Dark Yellow Dot. As a writer, they have also created online content for Rife magazine as an official contributor. In 2019 they competed in the semi-finals of BBC 1Xtra and BBC Asian Network’s Words First.

They are an alumni of the University of the Underground, a tuition-free university which supports free, transnational, and pluralistic education, countercultures, nightlife, and unconventional research practices.
